ENGLISH VERSION
Cassandra Jean, the artiste who work on the Beautiful Creatures Graphic Novel accepted to answer my questions !
Thank you so much ! She is very nice and so adorable !
So I have the opportunity and the great honnor to share with you, this interview.
Can you tell us more about you? Who are you? How was born your passion for Drawings?
Cassandra:Greetings! I am Cassandra Jean... and I'm terrible at introductions. I cant remember a time when I didn't want to be an artist, well, there was about a year there in kindergarten where I wanted to be a veterinarian, but then I decided I'd rather just play with animals than try to heal them, so I draw instead. My mother is a poet and my father paints. My grandparents are writers, artists and photographers too. I guess art runs deeply in my DNA.
How have you been chosen for make the Beautiful Creatures Graphic Novel?
Well it was a very pleasant surprise! I had sent in my portfolio to Yen Press quite awhile ago, and then suddenly out of the blue last year I received an email from them. They had been apparently holding onto my portfolio for some time, waiting until they found a project that would suit my art style and they thought that I would be able to work well with the Beautiful Creatures story. When they told me about adapting Beautiful Creatures I rushed out and bought a copy immediately and read it and completely fell in love! I was practically falling over myself I was so happy to sign the contract.
How do you work? How is it to draw a Graphic Novel?
I work ... constantly! Every morning I wake up and draw right away. I have to get sketches approved and then ink the pages... add sound effects and gray inks and speech bubbles! It's tiring sometimes but I love it so much that it hardly feels like work. It's exciting work, and even more fun because I love Beautiful Creatures so much that I get to sit there and fangirl over characters as I draw them (Macon! aaah~)
In Beautiful Creatures, what's your favorite character ? Why?
Macon! Definitely Macon, he's my favorite. I have a huge crush on him and his smooth southern gentleman persona. My mother claims he's too old for me, but does age matter when hes an Incubus?? It shouldn't! I really just love how mysterious he is at the beginning of the story and you learn more about him as the books series progresses. He's really thoughtful and it's so fun to watch him zing the townsfolk when they gang up on Lena. My second favorite character is Link. He's so spunky and he's the kind of friend that everyone wished they had. Funny, maybe a bit of a slacker, but always there for Ethan whenever he needs him, no questions asked!
And always in Beautiful Creatures, what do you like the most?
I like the entire world that the authors have created. It feels like it has so much depth and mystery and you just really want to be a part of it, you know? But I think my favorite part of working on the Beautiful Creatures Manga is drawing the characters. It's so much fun to draw them the way I see them and share that with others.
Have you meet the authors, Margaret Stohl & Kami Garcia?
I haven't met them in person, and as far as work goes, our interaction is limited since I go through my editor at Yen Press for all work-related things. But I have exchanged small messages with them through social sites and they are incredibly kind people! They are so sweet and enthusiastic, I'm thrilled that they're the authors I get to work with.
I saw your copy, of the Beautiful Creatures Book, in your tumblr. It's really amazing !
It's not really complicated to transform a Book in a Graphic Novel?
It's not really complicated to transform a Book in a Graphic Novel?
It's not easy! Designing the characters was tough all by itself, trying to get their personalities to show through their designs just right, I think that Ethan gave me the most trouble. Since he's the main character he had to be perfect and there was a lot of trial and error. The adaptation is a lot of work, since I need to fit the entire novel into a manga form which means I can't include every little thing from every scene. I now have a lot more respect for directors who have to adapt a popular book into a movie. The fans sometimes complain about a scene being removed, but it's really difficult to make things fit appropriately into a new media!
Do you know when we will can buy your Graphic Novel?
Well, right now the chapters will be available through Yen Press' online magazine Yen+. If you subscribe you can read a new chapter each month! Once all of the chapters come out digitally, then you will be able to buy the printed copies. It should be available through amazon.com like Yen Press' other series. More information should be available on the Yen Press website once it gets closer to the date. (I don't know the exact date or anything at this point)
Thank you so much for answer my questions.
